George A. Garinis received his PhD from the Medical School of Athens (2001). From 2002 until 2008, he pursued his postdoctoral studies at the Erasmus Medical center in Rotterdam. In 2008, he became a group leader at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology-FORTH and in 2009 he became an Associate Professor of Human Genetics at the department of Biology, University of Crete

Research Interest:

Nucleotide excision repair (NER) is a major DNA repair pathway ensuring that the genome remains functionally intact and is faithfully transmitted to progeny. Besides cancer and aging, however, defects in NER lead to developmental abnormalities whose clinical heterogeneity and varying severity cannot be explained by the DNA-repair deficiency. Using a series of well-characterized mouse models, the Garinis lab is working on delineating the functional role of Nucleotide Excision Repair factors in development and disease. Current work in the lab is focused on elucidating the impact of genome instability on pathways associated with longevity, the functional role of NER factors in chromatin-based processes and the connection between genome instability and tissue-specific progeria
